TIPS FOR A GREAT TRIP

Clothing and Shoes: Layering is key to staying comfortable, so be sure to bring warm clothes and waterproof outer layers. While the boat has a cozy, heated cabin to keep you dry, you’ll likely want to spend some time outside, even if the weather is cold or damp.

Packing: There’s plenty of storage on the boat for extra layers and other essentials. If you’re planning to hike, there are bear boxes at the bottom of the trail where you can store any additional gear.

Bringing a Camera? We recommend using a waterproof or protective case for your camera gear. Bring a variety of lenses as well, as wildlife and scenery can sometimes be close by or, other times, further away.

Snacks and Drinks: We provide breakfast, drinks and a snack. We have water but ask that you bring a reusable bottle for water. If you’re hiking, feel free to pack a lunch. The trip ends at our office and café, where you can enjoy a meal to wrap up your adventure!

ABOUT THE HIKE

After the boat drops you off at Caines Head State Park, you’ll begin your hike to the historic Fort McGilvray. The trail is just over 2 miles to the top (5 miles round trip) with a 650-foot elevation gain, making it a moderately challenging hike. The well-maintained trail winds through the breathtaking Chugach National Forest, offering stunning views of Resurrection Bay, the surrounding mountains, and the coastline. Along the way, you’ll pass through lush forest, rocky terrain, and scenic overlooks, giving you a true taste of Alaska’s wild beauty.

Be sure to pack sturdy, comfortable shoes as the trail can be uneven in places. We also recommend bringing snacks, a packed lunch, and plenty of water to stay fueled for the hike. The hike will take around 2 to 3 hours depending on your pace, so be prepared for a rewarding and memorable journey. After reaching the top and exploring the WWII-era fortifications, you’ll make your way back down, with a scenic return to the boat.

When you return to Miller’s Landing, your adventure doesn’t have to end—our office and café are the perfect place to unwind. Enjoy a delicious meal or refresh with a drink as you share stories of your hike and enjoy the stunning views of Resurrection Bay.
